Eoghan Finegan who was the toast of punters as the Kells jockey was a cool as a cucumber on the 5-1 shot.

It might only have been a handicap hurdle for horses rated 120 or less but you would swear Ragmans Corner was after winning the Troytown such was the rip-roaring reception he received at Navan in September.
Eoghan Finegan who was the toast of punters as the Kells jockey was a cool as a cucumber on the 5-1 shot, who was still on the bridle coming down to the last and coasted clear on the run-in for a hugely popular fourth career success for the six-year-old gelding. If you didn't know it, you would never have though the chap on his back was a 7lb claimer.
"That day was magic," said Finegan, who turned 21 on Sunday. "It was special because I know a lot of the lads who own him [Wet Room Syndicate]. Tommy Moriarity, one of the lads in the syndicate, coached me at underage for St Michael's so it was nice to win something for him.
"Navan is my local track and it's a fantastic place. It's where you want to be riding winners and when you ride a local winner around there it's some buzz."
Finegan has nine winners to his name on the track and a further six in point-to-points. His reputation is rising and the Gerry Keane-trained Ragmans Corner has certainly helped with that process.
"It's incredible how much that horse has improved," Finegan said. "He travelled beautifully for me that day I won on him at Navan and jumped great, too. He's a hell of a horse. I was second on him during the summer at Galway, as well. He owes me nothing!"
Finegan celebrated his first victory in the saddle at Punchestown on New Year's Eve in 2023 when he teamed up with his uncle Hugh Finegan to win a bumper on Lady Bluebird.  He's a busy man of late.
Elaborating on his weekly routine, Finegan said: "I ride out in Gavin Cromwell's three days a week and the other mornings I'm in Anthony McCann's place and with Ciaran Murphy. Then it's over to my uncle Hugh in the evenings so it's flat out at the moment."
When asked for his idol growing up, Finegan replied instantly: "Ruby Walsh. He was the best, wasn't he?"
No argument here, Eoghan.
Get your notebooks out, folks. Finegan has a horse to follow for the jumps season.
He said: "I won a bumper at Listowel last month on a horse for Pat Collins called Castlerly Rock. He's a lovely individual and I would say he'll do really well over hurdles. I could see him winning his maiden hurdle sooner rather than later and kicking on from there. He gave me a lovely feel."
