Ragman's Corner winning at Navan Racecourse with connections smiling on.
Gerry Keane's claim to fame these days is being the father of six-time Irish champion Flat jockey Colin, but he's also an extremely talented trainer in his own right.
The softly-spoken gentleman proved just how good at Royal Ascot back in 2024 when Crystal Black stormed down the outside to land the Duke Of Edinburgh Stakes at 11-1 for the local Wear A Pink Ribbon Syndicate, who gave the word 'celebrate' a whole new meaning afterwards.
There has also been the likes of Laughifyouwant, who won the Irish Cambridgeshire in 2020 and the Ahanoora Handicap at Galway a year earlier, and smart staying chaser Howaya Pet, as well as Some Leader and Step Back. He has done it on the Flat and over jumps and is still going strong.
Recently, Ragmans Corner has been flying the flag for his Trim yard. He has won six times and has become a course specialist at Navan, where he has won twice and also finished runner-up in a handicap hurdle at the Navan Racing Festival last November.
Keane is lucky to still be here. He suffered a horror fall on the gallops back in 2021 and was told he might never walk again, but he has made a remarkable recovery and is back doing what he does best - training horses and sending out winners.
"Winning at Royal Ascot was the highlight, I suppose," Keane said. "We've had a few nice horse over the years, but that was a great day over at Ascot. I was a farrier by trade and I worked for Michael Cunningham for about 12 years. He was a very good trainer.
"We've about 14 or 15 running on the track at the moment, but we'd have maybe 35 riding out. A lot of those would be pre-trainers."
When asked for a horse to follow over the next few months, Keane replied: "I thought War Rooms was a bit unlucky at Leopardstown on Saturday, that turned into a sprint which didn't suit him, but he wasn't beaten far. I'm looking forward to him going over hurdles, along with Genuine Article. They have both schooled well."
On the phenomenal achievements of son Colin, he said: "I knew he could ride and I knew he had the temperament for it, but how could you know it would get to where it has. It's incredible."
